Indomethacin, one of the traditional drugs used to prevent preterm birth, inhibits the enzyme cyclooxygenase, which plays a key role in the development of premature birth. Not long ago, at the same time several research groups (including a group from the University of Washington) found that women with preterm labor have abnormally high levels of COX izoenzymes, only one, and exactly cyclooxygenase-2. Therefore, researchers hypothesized that a specific inhibitor of cyclooxygenase – 2 generic Celebrex may be effective in preventing preterm delivery with the fewest side effects.

24 women aged over 18 who have a birth on the age of 24 to 34 weeks’ gestation, received Celebrex or Indomethacin. All patients were randomized and included in the first group treated with Indomethacin, a second group treated with generic Celebrex. The health of mother and fetus before birth has been carefully studied.

In 1988, for inventing this drug colleague lab GlaxoWellcome Gertrude Ellion was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine!
